A polo team has four mounted players, but the number of horses is much higher because players switch horses after each chukker (period). The total number of horses per team can range from 12 to 48 or more, depending on the level of play, with professional players typically bringing 8–10 horses each.
- Players: There are four players on a team.
- Horses per chukker: Players change horses after each chukker (a 7.5-minute period), and sometimes more often if a horse tires.
- Minimum horses per team: A minimum of 24 horses is needed for a typical six-chukker match (6 horses per player x 4 players).
- High-goal professional teams: Professional players often bring 8–10 horses each, leading to 32–40 horses for a team in a high-level game.
- Spare horses: Players also bring spare horses on the sidelines in case a player’s horse tires or gets injured.
